West Beach Conference Center at Kiawah Island Resort

Brintons teams up with Kent Interior Design to design and manufacture 3,200 square yards of custom woven Axminster carpet at the West Beach Conference Center at Kiawah Island Resort in South Carolina.

Located a mere 21 miles from the historically rich streets of Charleston, SC, the West Beach Conference Center sits along wide stretches of picturesque beaches and oaks swathed in age-old moss. The conference center, designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, boasts 23,000 square-feet of flexible pre-event and modern meeting spaces that can host up to 1,000 attendees.

With the entire space being covered in Brintons Axminster carpet, the design team knew the floors were a key element to the interior. Kent Interior Design researched local plant life to incorporate into the massive ballroom and prefunction design.

Lauren Topits, Associate at Kent Interior Design says, "We wanted to have a fresh and updated design, so we chose to do an organic pattern, rather than the typical bordered designs." When working with a conference center it is crucial to keep in mind the space can have multiple functions and room configurations, "so it was important that the organic design flowed naturally into each space." explains Topits.

“With the help of Brinton’s awesome design team, we were able take the concepts of dwarf palm leaves and magnolia trees and turn it into a full custom carpet. The outcome was a unique and colorful representation of bringing natural elements found on Kiawah into the interiors.”

For the West Beach Conference Center and other similar projects, Axminster carpet is adhered using a double stick system. A double stick system describes the process when a pad is glued to the floor with a releasable adhesive and then the carpet is stuck to the pad with a permanent multipurpose paste.

According to Dwight Carter, Brintons Installation and Technical Services Manager, "The key to a successful install is following the seaming diagrams and making sure the patterns are straight and aligned."

If the seams do not match up properly, it can become obvious that carpet was not laid down well, ruining the appearance and overall design goal.
