Morial Convention Center (MCC), New Orleans, USA
It was a year of resurgence for the MCC and it now stands as a shining star that progress is being made in the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast region. The $67 million restoration and renovation is now complete and the Convention Center is again hosting national events.
After having lost nearly 90 events from September 2005 to March 2006, the Center boasts "70% of citywide convention business has been retained in 2007 and 93% retained in 2008, reflecting a phenomenal retention rate for convention business post the worst natural disaster in US history", according to a MCC spokesperson.
A redesigned interior palette that reflects a bright, modern space forms the foundation of the renovation. Cool blue and green colors, warm woods and brighter whites lighten the Centers concourses for a dazzling overall space. According to a TVS statement, the new, fresh palette pulls from the areas deeply rooted relationship with it cultural and natural landscape. The nearly 90,000 sq. yds of Axminster carpet featured in the lobbies, concourses, and meeting rooms is custom designed by Brintons to reflect the area's greatest natural resources - the river, the Port of Orleans and its surrounding wetlands. The blues and greens, along with the lyrical pattern, designate pathways and define spaces as visitors move throughout the Center.
The 6th largest convention center in the nation, the MCC features a total of 3.1 million sq. ft of enclosed space, including 12 separate but combinable exhibit halls, 140 meeting rooms, a 4,000 seat Conference Auditorium and two ballrooms, both spanning more than 30,000 sq. ft. It consistently ranks in the US top 10 for hosting the most national conventions and tradeshows.
