Terminal City Club, Vancouver, Canada
The Terminal City Club was first established in 1892 but has been in its current location for the last 10 years. As a popular private members club, the last decade had taken its toll on the interior of the property, so the management team decided to undertake an extensive renovation to breath new life into the club. Brintons was commissioned by SSDG Interiors Inc. to supply suitable carpet for the ballroom, meeting room, dining room, corridors and boardroom.
Client Brief
The driving force behind the renovation project was to ensure differentiation from other private business clubs by creating an environment that would be a comfortable and stylish place of retreat. The design scheme for the interior of the Terminal City Club had to be attractive to new and younger members, while also embracing and honouring the history and tradition of the club. The project was therefore given the tagline ‘honouring tradition, embracing tomorrow’.
Creative design approach
Having carefully considered the client brief and assessed the design requirements when fusing traditional elegance with contemporary appeal, the Brintons design team presented its bespoke Timorous Beasties design collection to the client for consideration. By taking inspiration from the large and bold designs within the Timorous Beasties collection that depict insects, plants, flowers and leaves, a dramatic feature floor would be born – elegantly complimenting the original woodwork and fixtures that were retained during the renovation.
The solution that was delivered
The client elected to use a customised version of the ‘C Weed’ design that forms part of the ‘Leaves’ chapter of the Timorous Beasties design collection and also designs from the ‘Vintage Damask’ chapter. The ‘C Weed’ designs depict underwater foliage and give way to a simple and relaxed feel, thanks to the simplicity of flow. With overlaid foliage patterns at the heart of the design, the carpet has great depth and by using a colour palette that included light and dark chocolate and beige, the carpet brought a strong feeling of relaxation and elegance to the interior. The customised ‘Vintage Damask’ design was used to make a dramatic feature of the dining room at Terminal City and pitched a bold red colour against stylish base colours of brown and beige.
Services provided by Brintons
Brintons provided a full project management service to the Terminal City renovation project. This included planning, designing, manufacturing and installing the fine quality woven Axminster that was produced for the venue.
Brintons Reaction
John Bain, Brintons’ Global Design Director, said: “The Terminal City project has really embraced two of the main features of the Timorous Beasties Collection: providing a luxurious pattern to give a certain area of a property added glamour and elegance, and providing natural patterns that give off a feeling of simple relaxation. And although the use of ‘Vintage Damask’ and ‘Leaves’ patterns presents a whole new approach to bold and striking interior carpet design, the client has very clearly recognised that both patterns are also very sensitive and complimentary to the historical elements of the property that were retained during the renovation.”
Client Reaction
We first saw Brintons’ ‘Timorous Beasties’ collection at the HD Show in Las Vegas and we knew this was the product we wanted for Terminal City Club. It was fresh, bold and imaginative – the design we chose was traditional with a twist. From initial meetings in Atlanta to the review of product and production in Portugal, working with Brintons has been a real treat.
