MoMo Restaurant, Melbourne, Australia

MoMo is Melbourne’s most elegant restaurant and is located within the 40million dollar Grand Hyatt redevelopment. It delivers a beautiful banquet of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Owned and operated by innovative Melbourne restaurateurs Dean and Geremy Lucas, MoMo is a lush, decadent dining room with soft edges and curving lines. Brintons was appointed by Surround Style – the commissioned interior designer – to provide the carpet at MoMo.

Client Brief

The task of bringing the vision for the interior of MoMo to life was the responsibility of Linda Whitfield from Surround Style. Brintons was required to work closely with Linda and the Lucas brothers to create a design that made a feature of the floor and complimented the many other customised fixtures and fittings that were to be used throughout the glamorous space.

Creative design approach

The client had collected many textiles and artefacts during an overseas sourcing and inspiration trip that took in Moscow, Las Vegas and New York. The design direction for the carpet in MoMo Restaurant was to take inspiration from this exotic collection and use a combination of two leaf patterns from Brintons’ ‘Timorous Beasties’ design collection to create a highly contrasting feature floor in tones of suede, dark brown, cocoa and flax. An important design challenge was that the large dining room would be sectioned off with moveable walls to create smaller exclusive dining spaces so the carpet design needed to cater for this requirement.

The solution that was delivered

Brintons’ lead designer on the MoMo project combined an over-scaled large leaf pattern with a smaller trailing kelp design to bring movement and flow to the space ensuring that the design looked equally impressive in smaller sections as when viewed in its entirety. By layering the designs together in an asymmetrical fashion, Brintons created a design that added dimension and interest to the space whereby foliage appears to be emerging from the walls giving restaurant guests the feeling of being ensconced in a luxurious subterranean Moroccan courtyard.

Services provided by Brintons

Brintons provided a complete range of service for the MoMo project including concept design, flooded floor plans, weave planning and shaping, manufacturing and installation advice. The supplied rich woven carpet fitted the floor space exactly because the Brintons’ shaping and planning department used the final design layout to plan a weaving schedule that ensured the carpet was woven to plan and with minimal wastage.

Brintons Reaction

Xander Okhuizen, Brintons’ Sales and Marketing Director APAC, said: ”The end result at MoMo is a stunning example of how an over-scaled non-repeating pattern can add immense drama and warmth to a space. It is great when an interior designer can be inspired by a design from one of our collections – Timorous Beasties in this case – and then work with our in-house design team to create a truly bespoke product.”
