Katagami - the art of pattern
A collection of custom woven carpet designs.
Originating in the Nara Period (710-794), Katagami (Japanese stencils) were first used for applying designs in dye to leather goods such as stirrups and warrior helmets. They later came to be used for dyeing textiles and made great advances with the development of the kimono culture.
The early paper stencil patterns were called Ise Katagami since they were created in towns such as Shiroko and Jike on the shore of Ise Bay in former Ise Province (present-day Mie prefecture). They were sold all over Japan by itinerant traders.
Brintons hold one of the world’s largest private collections of Japanese stencils (over 800) and have transformed these beautiful, hand-crafted pieces into a unique and inspiring collection of carpet designs.

Biedermeier
An exclusive collection of custom woven Axminster carpet designs, highlighting the practical relevance of period art and design. Biedermeier was created in conjunction with the internationally-touring art exhibit, Biedermeier: The Invention of Simplicity, organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum.
Jonette Slabey, Jonette Slabey & Associates, creator and project director of the collaboration, notes, "Given the current focus on modern sensibility and quest for simplicity in design, I felt the time was right for a Biedermeier resurgence in the marketplace. Brintons has succeeded in creating transitional carpet designs that are fresh, familiar, beautiful and inviting."

Timorous Beasties by Brintons - First Weave
First Weave marks the start of this collaboration. “We relished the idea of designing carpets without the constraints and preconceptions of what a carpet design should look like. We enjoyed the play on scale with designs that challenge repeat. Compositions which are balanced without using symmetry and exploiting the technical difficulties of interpreting detail into a woven carpet.” commented Paul Simmons.
Many of the carpet designs have taken images from the outside world and brought them into the interior.
The carpets have been designed to use the floor space to differentiate the interior space from corridor to room, from outside to inside, from public space to private, from luxurious pattern to simple relaxation.
