Brintons Melbourne ALS Ice Bucket Challenge!

25th August 2014

The Brintons team in Melbourne, Australia have taken on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge - and have put the word out to our other offices worldwide to 'ice-up' or donate!

Brintons Melbourne ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

While this challenge has been doing the rounds for a little while now, it's important to understand the disease we want to help raise awareness for.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost.

With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralysed. While there is no known cure or treatment for the disease yet, scientists are hard at work to try and find a way to help those who live with ALS.

There are significant devices and therapies that can manage the symptoms of ALS that help people maintain as much independence as possible and prolong survival.

Taking part in the challenge today was (L-R) David Fleming (Senior Project Manager), Xander Okhuizen (Asia Pacific Director), Chantelle Yoth (Sales Support) and John Buising (National Account Manager - Retail Groups).

Collectively they have put the challenge out to co-workers from Australia, America, India and UK offices.

We hope that in our small way, by partaking in the Ice Bucket Challenge and donating to the cause, we can make a difference to those who live with this illness.
